Stress Management Techniques That Will Bring Calmness Back To Your Life
Learn The Secrets To Stress Release
Wendy Reynolds From the desk of Wendy Reynolds
Hi and welcome. 15 years ago I had 2 choices - watch my husband kill
himself or take control and bring his stress down to a level that would
hopefully save his life!
Thankfully he's still with us today but it was touch and go back then I
can tell you.
As a lawyer in the city he knew all about stress, actually he thrived
on it earlier in his career. Age though brought further success and as
he climbed the office ladder the stress started taking it's toll.
By the time he was in his early 50's he was always hopelessly stressed.
He felt he was being pulled in all directions. He always seemed in a
rush and then if myself or our children tried to pin him down to a meal
out or a family get together etc. he would find himself to be too
exhausted.
Therapy was costing nearly $200 an hour and getting no where and the
hypnotist I convinced him to try was a waste of time.
Paul went grey within 12 months and I think that's what drove it home
to him the damage stress was doing to his body as well as his mind.
I had taken to asking him about his sessions with the psychologist and
it struck me as strange he could only ever recount about 15 minutes of
the hour. "You must have talked about other things, you were with him
for 60 minutes?"
It seems his mind would wander onto other things or he would remember
feeling stressed talking about something that made him stressed but
then couldn't remember what the psycologist had recommended he do the
next time he found himself in that situation.
Information Overload!
By this time I had read just about every book on stress management
available, had spoken to many other recovering victims and had tons of
my own notes.
"This morning when the traffic grinds to a halt on your way into the
office I want you to instantly switch off the news you always listen to
and put your favorite CD on instead. I then want you to think about why
that album means so much to you and when you get to work you can phone
and tell me."
It worked a charm :-) Every morning that week we would do the same
thing but with a different spin. For instance I would give him my
favorite CD and he would listen to it and have to tell me why it meant
so much to me.
He got it wrong of course but that didn't matter, he was arriving at
the office in a good mood and stress free! I still smile when we are
out in the car and get stuck in traffic - even now he still
automatically reaches for the radio and fiddles with it until he finds
some cheerful song he can sing along to.
The following week we added a technique for not getting stressed out
with a particularly annoying Junior who seemed to rub him up the wrong
way and over time I developed other methods to relieve similar
stressful situations and would give him one per week so as not to
overload.
I called it my 'baby steps system' and before long it was in demand.
Work collegues and clients noticing the change in Paul were pestering
him for the name of his new 'life coach' (they were just becoming
fashionable then). My friends, seeing the difference in mine would beg
me to do something for their husband.
I would meet these people and give them a stress inventory I had
developed and then work out a baby step for that week with more to
follow in the weeks ahead.
Four years, several courses and some formal training later and I was
helping people in a more professional capacity.
Although now only part time as Paul has since retired and we spend a
lot of time traveling, I still do corporate stress management coaching
and for the last 2 years, this online course.
